A home-based business is on its way to profitability if it begins to be ranked well in search engines like Google. Chances are also good that leads are forthcoming if the new website is talked about on Twitter or Facebook. The reason is that these SEO sites provide the two-way links that make a new website a step closer to marketing success. And how does a new site reach this enviable stage?

The answer is sharing and social networking, the key to success in Internet marketing. In the first place, you learn about Google, Facebook and Twitter by word of mouth – from friends or from the news media. This is sharing and social networking in action. And when you acquire visibility in these sites, it is also word of mouth that will propel your business to growth. As you get talked about, people will then link to your site, sharing with everybody else how they liked your website. That means more visitors!

You can outdo search engine optimization as well and hasten traffic to your site by continuously sharing your thoughts and ideas with others. You can write them down as articles or blogs for the well-visited social networking sites. You can write about why you turned to Internet marketing, how you made your very first sale, or the relative ease of buying online. The idea is to help people and catch their interest. Everyone likes to be helped and if they are interested in what you’re selling, they will visit your website or product.

From the start-up of your home business, tell your friends about it and share your initial fears, the exhilaration of the first hit, and your vision of the future. Encourage your friends to help you spread the word about your business and it will go around. If you handle your visitors well, the word will continue to spread.

A strategic plan is as essential to business as a road map to travelers. The road map sets the directions to where you intend to go and thus prevents you from getting lost. If you fail to follow the map and take the wrong turn, this means loss of time and, if you’re driving, a waste of gas and money. And since this will leave you frustrated and stressed out, there may also be some health consequences.

The same road map is needed in email marketing, the driver of the home business industry. As map to Internet marketing, success, a strategic plan in email marketing will point you in the right direction, keep you from staying off course, and identify the quickest routes by which you can reach your business goals. Like a good directional map, a good strategic plan will save time and costs, help you to budget efficiently, ensure that your email efforts are synchronized with your business goals, and allow you to plan ahead so that you don’t miss the opportunities along the way. With a strategic plan in place, you can accomplish more at less time!

A strategic emailing plan covers all aspects of email marketing, from the different types of email, the task of crafting effective opt-in messages, and the challenge of formulating great subject lines, from addresses and message content, to the topics of optimizing deliverability, viral marketing techniques, and the use of third-party lists. But it must not be carved in stone so that you could tweak it as the need arises. It needs to be flexible so that as your knowledge and experience widens, you can incorporate new ideas and ditch old ones that don’t deliver. This is considered normal and even smart in Internet marketing.

How do you craft a good email marketing strategy? The best way is to devise your own plan and then include some techniques learned from an analysis of the way your competitors do business. You may also want to subscribe to the mailing lists and email newsletters of the competitors without giving away any information about you and your own business. It is also useful to learn what types of emails your competitors send, when they send them and who the addressees are. After sometime, this will give you a good feel for their basic programs, and you can use this knowledge to help shape your own campaign.

When you observe good marketing practice that primes your home business for success, you gain the trust of the people in your downline team and inspire them to match your pace. They spread the word around and more people will want to get involved with your online business. With more people joining your team, you become the epitome of a successful entrepreneur, forever assured of residual income – the bread and butter of Internet marketing.

This is why if anyone ever starts a home business, he must build for success. If you start on the wrong foot and stumble on your first few steps, there will be no second chances. No one wants to join a marketer with the makings of a loser. To build for success, your must develop the proper mindset and aim high because if you tell yourself that you can make do with a $500 monthly income, that could be all you will ever earn.

Once you’ve sets your sights high, the next step is to find the system with the greatest possibility of achieving that vision. The system is good if it has worked for the success of other entrepreneurs before you, if it builds trust and good relationship with customers, if it unselfishly shares with others whatever success the marketer attains.

With this system in place, you want to make sure that you’ve learned all the finer points of Internet marketing from the masters and top producers who are only too willing to share their success with others. Along the way, it pays to conduct research and tests to find what is working and what is not. This again calls for mentors and partners who unselfishly share the secrets to their success by helping others become successful too. This is why Internet marketing is also called leverage marketing.

Well-known economist Paul Zane Pilzer sees network marketing as one of the industries that will grow fastest in the next 10 years. This is expected to happen notwithstanding the large number of collapsing online distributors and companies at present, with an attrition rate reaching 97 percent. This prediction will come true despite the crisis-abetted proliferation of scams that give network marketing a bad name.

Pilzer apparently based the fearless forecast on a new trend in online prospecting that dispenses with the traditional marketing methods. When these old methods are in use, the network marketer does not discriminate on the people he convinces to go into business with him. The old mindset is that the more people recruited into the downline, the better for the business.

Now, an increasing number of would-be entrepreneurs choose to acquire training on the finer points of online marketing before actually plunging into the business. Such training combines the old and new methods of prospecting, but in essence it places importance on quality rather than quantity. The main criterion is that the new recruits must share the vision and passion of the marketer. This improves the marketer’s chances for receiving residual income on a continuing basis, which cannot happen if the people recruited into the team are the half-hearted dilly-dalliers and tire kickers who get off at the first sign of trouble.

As a result of the new importance being placed on training, more and more home-based businesses are starting on the right foot. It’s an auspicious start if the marketing system has the quality of being replicated. The reason is that if the downline members can easily replicate the system, retention is enhanced and residual income assured.

Training and education on marketing and sales techniques pave the road to success in network marketing if imparted by highly qualified producers who teach from experience.

In some American cities, for example, lack of local customers has forced groceries, appliance and school-office supply stores to relocate elsewhere or completely go out of business.

The next question that comes to mind when you face up to that reality is how and where to start. The best way to overcome these start-up jitters is to try and gain the confidence of one who knows what he is getting into. Such knowledge is readily available from home business communities that transfer the experience of their top producers to newcomers. Internet marketing is also called affiliate marketing because it is about people upstairs helping pull up those below for the betterment of the entire industry.

Internet marketing provides an escape hatch from the worst financial crisis the world has probably experienced. The dire economic climate is driving hundreds of thousands of people to the recession-proof home business industry, which enables survival and making money at the same time. While most sectors of the conventional brick-and-mortar business go bust, there’s a boom in online business.

There is actually nothing new in Internet marketing. Even before the current economic meltdown, Internet marketers have been earning tens of billions of dollars from year to year selling products and services for online companies. Consumers have accepted the relative ease and convenience of purchasing online, plus the customized approach to placing an order, since the advent of the Internet and e-commerce in the 1990s. The onset of the economic crisis later in this decade only served to increase its attraction for both consumers and would-be entrepreneurs.

Surviving and then making money on Internet may sound complicated to the uninitiated, especially those with less technological savvy. But the process is really simple. Making money as an Internet marketer is done in three simple steps that anyone can learn. First, you as an Internet marketer send potential buyers to company websites. Second, if a sale is concluded, you get a commission from the sourcing company. Some of the over 100,000 companies now selling their wares online even pay 90 percent of the product sale price. Finally, the company you send buyers to pay you directly, either through a PayPal account or wire transfer to your bank account.

There is a popular notion that once you learn the nuances of affiliate marketing, which requires that you promote your business and products in oft-visited e-commerce sites, you’re on your way to a successful marketing career. Affiliate marketing is not the magic formula that many perceive it to be. It helps, but you still need good and effective tactics to go with your overall marketing strategy.

A marketing tactic is effective if proven in practice by successful online marketers who developed it through the proverbial trial-and-error route. This knowledge they earned the hard way they now impart to newcomers in the home business industry.

One of the tried and tested techniques is the use of different web pages for each product in one’s marketing portfolio. It has been found unwise to penny-pinch on web hosting by promoting a host of products through a generic web design. Another great idea is to write articles highlighting the uses of each product line and including them on the website as a supplementary page. For all the products, the web pages must be attractive and compelling, with a call to action on the information. Each headline should attract the readers to try and read more, even contact you. Highlight your special points. This will help your readers to learn what the page is all about and will want to find out more.

When writing articles, the best outlets are e-zines, e-reports and other publications with targeted audience base. In terms of frequency, at least two articles per week will do at a minimum of 300 words each. By this strategy, you can expect to lead as much as 100 targeted readers to your site daily. But remember that not all these 100 visitors are likely to transact business with you. Be happy with 1 or 2. Internet marketing is about perseverance and persistence.

The biggest mistake a home-based marketer can make is to simplify matters by seeking to accomplish the same marketing objectives for both prospective and current customers. This is a shotgun approach that has no place in an industry that puts a premium on targeted and personality marketing, and where cutting corners is an invitation for trouble. In the first place, the marketer’s tasks for existing customers are vastly different from those required for prospective clients.

For current customers, the first imperative is to exact their loyalty for continuous patronage. This can be accomplished by an email marketing campaign that encourages customers to re-subscribe. When you email a customer for payment after a transaction, you may sugarcoat the message with loyalty-building suggestions for renewal.

There is no need for such an effort in trying to hook new customers. The immediate goal here is to make customers out of prospects, and so email marketing should strive to generate direct sales. This can happen only if your emails convince the prospect that your products are reasonably priced and the purchasing process involved is hassle-free. It also helps if you let the prospect see that your product is something that they have to purchase.

In effect, marketing directed at prospective customers is focused on lead generation and brand awareness. You generate leads when you generate customer interest for your product or services. Working for brand awareness amounts to the same thing, although this is designed to make people recognize your brand and the company you represent. Most companies begin their marketing campaigns with a brand awareness strategy, introducing new products or services. Once the brand is established, the marketing activity switches to lead generation.

It’s true, the home business industry has served as launch pad for the successful entrepreneurship of people without much of a business experience. But in many cases, the lack of such experience is compensated by skills in other spheres and the proper mindset and attitudes. They are also helped along by a great deal of common sense.

Small start-up businesses are driven by talent. Your talent may be raw but if it makes you stand out in a crowd, then you have a future in online marketing. Talents differ, as the old saying goes. The trick is to use any talent you possess to jumpstart your business. If you have some background in medical sales, for example, link up with affiliate companies that peddle healthcare products. If it’s technical expertise such as web design, this can be the wind that would blow your sail. In effect, this unique skill is the raw material of your business, the core of your business plan, on the back of which is the vision you will communicate with the people you recruit and your selling proposition.

Although business experience is not necessary, you however cannot do without people knowledge. A little grounding in everyday psychology will come in handy when you handle the task of establishing your network of contacts. This network enables home business owners to identify prospects, potential investors, suppliers and potential employees. If you have people knowledge, you know that customers take a lot of convincing to do business with start-ups. So it’s imperative that you build a network of contacts consisting of people whose trust you have earned beforehand for them to deal with your business.

While building this all-important network, you have to master the art of persistence. Any business needs time to get going and no entrepreneur becomes instant success. As long as you have the above-mentioned talent and your unique perspective on the business, you should be willing to keep trying until your labor bears fruit.
